University Commencement brings students from all of the George Washington University's (GW) schools together for the conferral of their degrees. While individual names are not called, graduates rise as their degrees are announced by their deans and conferred by President Thomas LeBlanc.
This year, University Commencement takes place on Sunday, May 19, 2019. School celebrations ceremonies will be held on campus the week of May 16-19.
GW is the only university in Washington, D.C., to host Commencement on the National Mall. Surrounded by the iconic memorials and monuments of the Mall, graduates will gather together one last time in celebration with their friends and family.
GW's committment to accessibility applies to all of our Commencement ceremonies. We provide services such as support for wheelchair users and sign language interpreters for graduates and guests in attendance who need them.
Unable to attend the ceremonies? You can watch all of the ceremonies on this website. University Commencement on the National Mall will also be shown on our Facebook Page.
University Commencement is an exciting day, not just for our graduates and their guests, but for the entire GW community. Students who are not graduating can join the celebration by applying to work at Commencement. If selected, you can be a part of an important tradition at the university.
Our student workers:
- Enjoy interacting with fellow members of the GW community
- Earn extra money for the summer
- Get to see their friends graduate
- Enjoy an extended stay in their residence hall until May 20, 2019, with no charge.
Commencement Student Staff greet guests, assist with seating, manage crowd control, and other responsibilities to supper the event.
