Cap and Gown Information

Important Information About Cap and Gown (Regalia)

Graduates (except Law School and School of Medicine and Health Sciences - MD candidates) have three options for purchasing regalia prior to Commencement Week:

1. CLOSED. Graduates may purchase regalia online through our official regalia vendor, Herff Jones from now until 11:59 p.m. April 21, 2008 only (Doctoral Regalia will be available online beginning Friday, February 8, 2008). Online purchase incurs a $20 shipping fee and the regalia will ship to the address provided during order placement.

2. Graduates may purchase regalia during Commencement Fair 2008. At this time, Herff Jones will be on site at the GW Bookstore to take regalia orders for Commencement Weekend. Graduates will be able to pick up their regalia from the GW Bookstore the week of Commencement.

3. Graduates who did not pre-order regalia may purchase cap and gown from Thursday, May 15 - Sunday, May 18 in the GW Bookstore from 8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. (Thursday - Friday), 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. (Saturday), and 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. (Sunday - Emergency Pick Up Only).

Please note, graduates of the Law School (order regalia on line) and SMHS-MD Candidates (rent their regalia) from the GW Bookstore via the Herff Jones Web site by following the prompts for GW and Law School or Medical School.  

All other schools and programs should purchase their regalia through the GW Bookstore during Commencement Fair 2008 or the Herff Jones Web site.

Please also note, Doctoral Candidates will receive their hoods at the official Doctoral Hooding Ceremony.

Regalia will not be available on the National Mall. Except as noted, graduates may keep their regalia after the ceremony.  Caps and gowns are also worn to the School Celebrations, the Phi Beta Kappa Installation, and the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony.  

For graduates who do not pre-order, a limited number of caps & gowns will be available for purchase from May 15 through 18 in-store only.

Regalia Pick-Up at The GW Bookstore
Wednesday, May 14     8:30 a.m. -7 p.m.
Thursday, May 15          8:30 a.m. -7 p.m.
Friday, May 16                8:30 a.m. -7 p.m.
Saturday, May 17           8:00 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Sunday, May 18             7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (emergency pick up only)

Graduates attending School Celebrations on Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17, are strongly encouraged to pick up their regalia no later than Thursday, May 15.

Faculty participating in School Celebrations or in the Commencement academic processions may rent their regalia from the GW Bookstore.
