Preparing for Commencement Weekend

1. Complete graduation clearance process

Students planning to graduate at the end of the semester for which they are now registering must complete an Application for Graduation to declare their degree candidacy.  The application deadline for students planning to complete classes in Spring 2013 or Summer 2013 was February 1, 2013.  For more information, including how you will receive your diploma, visit the Office of the Registrar.
 

2. Book hotel room(s)

Remind out-of-town guests to book hotel rooms soon!  View a list of hotels near the Foggy Bottom campus.
 

3. Pick-up Commencement and school celebration tickets

Spring 2013 and Summer 2013 graduates can pick up their Commencement and school celebration tickets directly from their school, once they have completed the mandatory online graduation survey. Graduates will need to present a copy of their email confirmation and valid GWorld card to claim their tickets at designated distribution points.  Please view the Ticket Distribution Schedule. Graduates will receive six guest tickets for Commencement on the National Mall.   The quantity of tickets for graduates’ school celebrations varies by school.
 
Commencement tickets for Summer 2012 and Fall 2012 graduates will be mailed by Friday, April 19 to the graduates' diploma addresses on file.  If you have not received your packet by Wednesday, May 8, please contact University Events at 202-994-7129.   
 

4. Complete online graduation survey

Beginning Monday, March 25, graduates will be able to complete the mandatory online graduation survey.  Hearing your thoughts and opinions will help GW know how to improve for future generations
 

5. Cap and gown (regalia)

Graduates can purchase regalia from Wednesday, May 15 through Sunday, May 19 at the GW Bookstore.  Emergency purchases only on Sunday, May 19. 
 
Regalia will not be available on the National Mall. Except as noted, graduates may keep their regalia after the ceremony. Caps and gowns are also worn to the school celebrations; the Phi Beta Kappa Induction Ceremony and the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony
 
GW Commencement gowns are made with 100% recycled material. For questions or further information about regalia purchases, please contact Herff Jones or 1-800-837-4235.
 

6. Check your diploma details

Graduates’ diplomas are awarded only under the official name of record at the time of graduation.  It will be mailed to graduates’ diploma address on file.  If graduates’ diploma addresses will change after Commencement Weekend, visit GWeb to update it.  For more information regarding changing your name, visit Office of Registrar, Graduation Services or review this flyer.
 

7. Receive your Cherry Tree Yearbook (Undergraduates Only) 

All GW seniors who get their portraits taken in the fall and spring will receive a yearbook courtesy of the university. For more information, visit the Cherry Tree website or contact the office.
 
Portraits are taken by Thornton Studio Photographers. Please contact Thornton directly about ordering photo packages and choosing your yearbook photo.
 

8. Participate in Grad Week events

Grad Week 2013 details will be held on Sunday, May 12 through Sunday, May 19 and includes events such as Atlantic City, Zero Year Reunion, Legacy Reception and more!  For more information or questions, visit the Grad Week websiteemail or 202-994-8135.
 

9. Give to your Senior Class Gift Campaign

GW Trustee Nelson Carbonell, SEAS ’85 and his wife Michele have challenged the Class of 2013 to beat the Class of 2012 record of 50% participation.
